I would design a deep, challenging and thought provoking strategy game from scratch for the touchscreen which would use the iPhone to do things that no one had ever thought of before. There was nothing like it on the iPhone at the time and so I decided to make the game that I wanted to play. I wanted a deeper, more strategic game with a strong narrative. I am a big fan of Pandemic 2 but I wanted much more from the game. from a 5 year old game, Pandemic 2 (an internet game) which has a similar concept (of trying to infect the world). It’s a strategy game where you only win if you “eradicate humanity” so I’m curious who came up with that idea and how. Walk me through how you guys came up with the idea for the game in the first place. Next thing I know, 750,000 people have downloaded it! It spreads through word of mouth (virally!) – people telling each other to check out this awesome game, and there is no higher compliment than that. When it launched, I told my friends and posted on 2 forums and things just went from there. This has been immensely satisfying and makes all the hard work worth it-especially because it shows that people are really enjoying the game. It also went from nothing to #1 paid iPad app in about 16 hours! All of this from an unknown studio with a marketing budget of $0. Within 5 days of release (when we released our first update to enable it on iPad) – it was #1 paid app in the US, Canada and lots of other places where it stayed for two weeks. Within 3 days of release, it had hit #1 paid game in the UK. (It’s now #2.) How did it rise that quickly? How satisfying is it for you guys, as a new developer, to see your game become #1 so quickly? How did you get word out about the game? Plague Inc., when I first contacted you, was the number one paid app on the iTunes App Store. As you play, you must decide whether to evolve your plague to be transmitted through birds, or make infected people cough, or become resistant to high temperatures and much more! bacteria, fungus, nano-virus), each of which plays very differently and needs different strategies to master. There are 10 different types of plagues which players unlock (e.g. It’s a bit like the movie Contagion except that you are the disease and you are in full control. is a strategy game in which you are a pathogen who has just infected “Patient Zero.” You must now manipulate and evolve your disease to create a deadly plague which infects the world and ultimately destroys humanity. I recently sat down over email with the creator of the game, head of Ndemic Creations, James Vaughan, to discuss the game’s success and how it became a viral hit.įor the uninitiated… how would you describe the game that is Plague Inc.? (But mostly because I can’t seem to win on normal! Turns out, I wasn’t paying attention to everything I should have been.) It’s become one of my favorite iOS games lately and I find myself turning to it regularly.īecause of that, I wanted to talk to the team behind it. I have to admit: this game is simultaneously addictive and frustrating.
